Big Ideas "Little" Movie

Recently, blockbuster movies have been appearing in theaters left and right. Avengers Endgame, Us, A Star Is Born or Captain Marvel to name a few. But lost in the cloud of hype swirling around these movies was the movie Little. A wholesome, family friendly, comedy about self-growth in a cold, harsh businesswoman. While the movie is certainly worth watching for its sweet message, entertaining plot, and humorous dialogue, I can be the first to admit it’s not quite an award winning, cinematic masterpiece. It’s a bit cheesy, and isn’t the most thought provoking movie. While all this may be true, it does have a factor that makes it pretty noteworthy.

Actress Marsai Martin was sitting down at the dinner table with her family one evening when she brainstormed the idea for a new movie. At age ten, Martin pitched the idea for her movie. A sort of coming-of-age, self actualization movie about a woman learning to be more compassionate and empathetic after being magically put back into her pre-teen body. That story that started at her dinner table, transformed before her eyes into a motion picture that at the young age of 14, she was an executive producer for.

14. Just coming out of middle school, my largest thought was figuring out high school, making friends, and having fun. Doing something as major as producing a movie is something that wouldn’t have even been within my realm of possibilities. Yet this girl had a vision of something she wanted to put into action. She laid out her ideas, put herself out there, and made her imagination into a reality, which I think is really admirable. At the young age of ten, when most kids are in elementary school, Martin created this story with her family, and made the decision to try and share it with the world.

Many of you may remember Martin from the hit TV show Black-ish and her firecracker role of the twin sister Dianne. For such a young age, her screen presence was extremely impressive. Constantly being a humorous presence on screen with sass practically radiating out of her character, but also beautifully handling tougher more emotional topics touched on in the show, Martin is sure to be a future force to be reckoned with in the acting industry. Having the talent she does, combined with the guts and drive it must have taken to pitch and produce a movie at such a young age, this young star has quite the future ahead of her.
